A bit of history on the Montessori Corn Maze Star Gaze...

In 2006, almost all the Arlington Montessori teachers and many parents traveled to DC one Saturday morning to hear from one of the last living survivors to have been taught directly by Maria Montessori. A mentally-feisty Phyllis Wallbank in her late 80s traveled from England to impart what it was like to learn the Montessori philosophy from Maria Montessori herself.

We all listened in awe of her experience as Maria Montessori's student and as a directress of her own school. One of the pieces of information we took away from her was how important it was for the students to be able to look at the stars at night. She said this was a rewarding opportunity that we have moved away from and urged us to provide opportunities to do just that.

That is how the Montessori Star Gaze at the Corn Maze was formed. It was a way for families to celebrate that important Montessori lesson and to have some family fun all in the same evening. We purposely choose a weekend when we have the newest moon with the hope the stars will be at their brightest.

Thanks to all the presenters and participants that have attended in the past. We hope many of our families will attend again this year. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy the event.
  • Mention Montessori at the door to get the group price and receive your Montessori sticker.
  • If you have Primary students you may want to enjoy the maze during the day, eat dinner there at 6:30 pm (hot dogs and hamburgers are sold), and finish with the lesson.
  • Families with older students may want to start with dinner at the facility at 6:30 pm (the line to order can take some time) and then participate in the night time maze.
  • We will give out a small special treat at 6:30pm so stop by the dining area with your Montessori sticker.
  • Dress in layers and bring gloves for the night time maze.
  • Make sure you bring flashlights for the night time maze.
  • Whether you go day or night, plan to go with friends through the maze. It makes the experience tons of fun!!
